When Barbaro was injured, the media was caught unprepared for the huge public demand for information. Due in part to misperception of equestrian sport as elitist, equestrian sport is largely ignored by media professionals. But a lesson was learned: Americans love horses and care deeply about them.

The Horse Industry is a $39 billion dollar industry with a $102 billion multiplier effect.

An American Horse Council study* shows a wide distribution of income among horse owners providing marketing opportunities in a variety of consumer groups.

 

• Approximately 34% of horse owners have a household income of less than $50,000
• 28% have an annual income of over $100,000
• 46% of horse owners have an income of between $25,000 to $75,000.
• California enjoys a $4 billion equestrian industry.
• The industry has a $102 billion impact on the U.S.economy when the multiplier effect of spending by industry suppliers and employees is taken into account.  Including off-site spending of spectators would result in an even higher figure.
• 4.6 million Americans are involved in the industry as horse owners, service providers, employees and volunteers.  Tens of millions more participate as spectators.

Equestrian sport is appropriate for all types of businesses and non-profits. Corporate sponsors of one of America's most prestigious shows, The Hampton Classic, include Bank of America, BNY Mellon Wealth Management, Hermes, and Morgan Stanley are listed among their glittering list of sponsors. Small local shows enjoy sponsorship from local small businesses, frequently truck dealers, banks and insurance agencies, and frequently co-promote community groups such as girl scouts and 4H, public health organizations, and senior organizations. Sponsorship packages include national and international businesses as well as small regional business, ranging from a few hundred dollars to millions.

The most successful horse shows are charity shows, providing financial support for worthwhile medical and community projects in return for a broad base of support in their community.

The great thing about horses is that whether it is a millionaire enjoying his expensive steed or a kid on a small budget, loving his lesson horse owned by the barn, they are having the same quality experience. They can sit on a bale of hay together and have a good horse talk!

Horsemen traditionally sponsor young talented riders, providing them with their best horses and providing financial support while they develop their skills. The equestrian industry has provided exciting careers for people from all economic conditions.

While the horse industry has its share of problems with drugs and negative behavior, children are taught sportsmanship, good citizenship and many important life lessons through their involvement with horses.Top riders, trainers and breeders are from all cultural and economic groups, with the common trait of being horse crazy kids who developed their talent in the industry through hard work and the generosity of mentors.

While the demographics of the big events are attractive, there is no greater joy than that of the small farm or event that pulls off a victory. Jesse Saldana, Trainer

Living his American Dream, Jesse started as a groom and worked his way up to becoming a top trainer of Arabian show horses. In 2007 Jesse won the coveted Canadian National Championship in Western Pleasure. He gets standing ovations and is one of the most loved people in Arabian horse competition.

Jesse shows in the western states and travels to the US Nationals, Canadian Nationals on the Arabian circuit. Jesse is available as a talent and is also seeking sponsors. Joao Serra Coelho

This is someone to watch carefully. Joao is a classically trained cavaliero from Portugal developing a sport acceptable to American audiences involving bloodless bull fighting. The maneuvers are highly athletic and the bravery and unity between horse and rider are inspiring. Joao also trains horses for personal riding use. Joao is a master trainer of the art of Marialva.

Sharon Camarillo brought the sport of barrel racing to a new level with her training techniques and choice of bloodlines. Sharon has her own annual event in Reno and is a popular announcer on the rodeo circuit.

Deborah Johnson is a judge, trainer and riding instructor who is a leader in the Arabian horse industry. Deborah exemplifies the diversity of the Arabian horse breed, showing them in both English and western divisions, including the challenging working cow horse class.

Another "ready for prime time" talent, Deborah is a Professor of Public Speaking at the University of Nevada and is available as a talent and also seeking sponsors. Deborah is building a new facility in Reno and judges on the open circuit as well as the Arabian horse circuit.

Patience is enjoying being a "dressage queen" on the Arabian circuit with her highly successful string of Arabian sport horses. Personable and principled, Patience is known for training without stressing her horses, and delivers exciting performances with happy, relaxed horses. Horse training, like raising children, is filled with many theories and confusing ideas, but Patience has developed a method that seems to enable these horses to function at upper level dressage without showing stress.

Patience is seeking sponsors and is available as a spokesperson or talent.

PRO BULL RIDERS

This is not strictly an equestrian sport, but horses are used in managing the cattle and I owe a great deal to this group for helping a small boy with brain cancer.

I include the PBR here to honor their community service. In my personal experience I can attest to the incredible generosity of this group. I approached them on behalf of a family whose 5 year old son had brain cancer. He loved to watch bull riding on TV with his grandpa.

I contacted PBR and they embraced this child, seeing him through surgeries, making him and another little boy who attended a camp for children with cancer the Grand Marshals of the Clements Stampede in California. Many, many hundreds of cowboys and families participated in the support of this family.

I had no prior connections with the PBR, but they sent bull riders to the home with a miniature horse 4 years ago, and this little boy is now recovered and riding in the Pee Wee Bull Riders Division of the Pro Bull Riders Circuit.

PBR has its own show with FOX.

Coleal Arabian Horse Farms

Legendary breeders of Arabian horses and breeders of the national contender Eden C. Watch to see how Eden C does at US Nationals in November 2007. His trainer is Greg Gallun. Greg also handles the US National Champion Enzo, sire of Eden C and another California bred horse.

North American Riding for Handicapped Association (NARHA)

Meet Erin Andrews. Her story says so much about what is wrong with our problem solving in our social services.

Erin was born without legs and only one arm. Her best friend owned the little mare shown at left. Erin applied to many handicapped riding programs but was rejected because they had never had anyone with her type of handicap and were worried about insurance. So she and her friend rigged up a bucket and tied it on to a saddle and the girls taught the mare voice commands and Erin was riding! Phooey on the officials and the insurance and all the rest! The kids got found out eventually and Erin's dad had a safer saddle made that could hold Erin. Erin has competed in horse shows and inspires everyone with her determination to overcome any challenge. She is shown here on the cover of an Arabian Horse Magazine.

Riding is not only good exercise for people with special needs; it is also a rewarding emotional experience to bond with the horse. Horses are highly socialized animals and protect their own injured members; some gifted horses are especially sensitive to the needs of riders with challenges and they serve in handicapped riding programs.

UC Davis Center for Equine Health

When Barbaro was injured, the horse ambulance, the sling and the splint were all products developed at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. The large animal rescue service covers the entire United States, providing expertise in rescuing animals in floods, fires and other catastrophes. The school is also a leader in the care of neonatal foals, equine melanoma and other projects funded through the generosity of the equine community. Horse owners are frequently owners of other animals and participate in benefits for small and large animal services.

The school has many projects worthy of sponsorship; we encourage you to consider including this outstanding program as a beneficiary for your event.

Photos: Anderson sling seen above and at left is used in helicopter rescue, but is also used in hospitals and ambulances. The Anderson sling was used in the care of Barabaro. Horses feel such relief from the pain they are known to sit down on the sling and fall asleep.
