Graphics & Photography for St. Elizabeth's Roman Catholic Church
This is a volunteer project for my parish. It includes signage for the front of the church, the church bulletin and communications and publicity for parish events.
Below: the season of Spring in the Catholic faith begins with a 6 week period of spiritual purification (Lent) in preparation for Easter, the highest holiday of the year. Throughout the year Catholics read scripture in their personal prayer and in the liturgy at mass. After Easter the liturgical readings are taken from the Acts of the Apostles, describing the early days of the Christian religion.
As Christians face violence and death in many parts of the world today, Christians are consoled by remembering the dangers faced by the early Christian martyrs who defended their faith. US Christians pray for their fellow Christians at risk in the world today and honor the sacrifices made by Christians throughout history. The joy and hope of the Easter season inspire members to keep the faith.
The two recent popes (John Paul II and Benedict XVI) have appreciated the use of communications technology in evangelization. The Vatican has issued guidelines for preserving the dignity of religious material and strongly urges the need to preserve the integrity of the liturgy and teachings of the church, resisting the consumer demand for dumbing down and simplifying or serving political agendas.
It is very challenging but rewarding to study the rich artistic heritage of the Church from so many cultures and time periods to create contemporary communications. The intellectual property of the Catholic church includes the profound beauty of Mozart Masses, the exquisite beauty of cathedrals and smaller chapels such as St. Chapelle, and the vast collection of paintings and sculptures - all available for the contemporary designer to ponder.
